Abu Dhabi, the Grand Mosque

 

 

 My Pics of the Day this week were all taken at the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Mrs Phanaperson and I stopped over on our way to the UK. Our son and his family are now living and working there.

Before we could tour the mosque, Pensri and Jay, our daughter-in-law, had to put on long black dresses and head scarves. Men wearing shorts put on a thobe, the long arab robe. Pensri had some difficulty with the head-scarf, but evetually got it sorted.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So two Thai Buddhists were finally suitably disguised. We joined a guided tour led by an Emirati and an Australian muslim woman called Michelle.

It was informative and interesting, with lots of architectural detail, how much things cost (a lot!), some lessons in muslim art appreciation, and some explanation regarding muslim religious life and practice.

The mosque wouldn't have meant much without their input, although it would still have been a beautiful and awe-inspiring building.

Lawrence when I travel to Thailand I go via Abu Dhabi but have never been outside of the airport. I hope to change that one day, perhaps when Wilai and myself take a trip to the UK.

I think it would be a fascinating place to see because I believe its all been built on desert land. The hotels, facilities and architecture are meant to be first class and I absolutely must view it one day. Wilai in a black dress and head scarf, that'll make a good photo and one I can use to tease her with for years to come.

Martyn, the hotels are certainly very expensive. A bottle of water in any restaurant is more expnsive than petrol.
